Questions and Answers

New Staff - 2007-2008

DON'T FORGET TO....

  1. LABEL all outer clothing, lunch boxes and personal belongings with your child’s name and class. This will help us return lost items and limit the phenomenal amount of Lost and Found that we collect (we have been very, very good to the Salvation Army).
  2. Remind your children about key school rules: no physical violence of any kind (including hitting back); no electronic toys, I-pods or Wheelies; no soda or glass bottles; and NO GUM OR CANDY (that includes those Lunchable Skittles).
  3. Most of all please send your healthy, well-rested, well-fed kids to school ON TIME every day!

Communications

Backpack mail is the main way we will be communicating with you. Want to stay informed about what is happening school-wide and in your child’s classroom? Make sure you check your child’s backpack each day for important notices! Our wonderful PTA is supplying each student with a fabulous folder for this purpose. Please make sure your child brings this and a backpack that is big enough to carry books and school-sized paper to school every day. This year we will continue to post information from the PTA & School Leadership Team, as well as all notices that are sent home, on our school website - www.ps150.net

There are several other ways to keep on top of what is happening at PS 150. The PTA and the SLT (School Leadership Team) both work closely with school personnel and are good conduits of information. Parents should also feel free to speak with me or Laura Cohen, our parent coordinator. In addition to reaching out to someone in person, parents can:

  • Attend the monthly breakfast meetings I hold. You set the agenda, so these informal meetings are great opportunities to discuss a wide range of school-wide issues.

  • Come to our morning workshops on curriculum, parenting, testing, and other school issues (better yet, suggest one!).

  • Read the PS 150 newsletter, published every three or four months. This PTA-sponsored publication includes regular columns by me and Laura, articles about the work done in our classrooms and by our PTA, guest pieces by children, parents, and teachers, and a mouth-watering recipe from Annie.

  • Lastly, don't forget to attend our monthly PTA meetings. They are a fun, interesting, and informative way to stay abreast of current events at PS 150.

If you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress or school life, please bring them to the classroom teacher first. If you are unable to resolve the situation with the teacher, you should schedule a meeting to talk to me. If necessary, we can schedule a meeting of all the adults concerned. The best way to reach your child’s teacher is through a note in your child’s backpack or in the teacher’s mailbox (located in the general office). Please know that though your child’s teacher does want to hear your concerns, line-up and dismissal are not good times to raise them, as teachers are responsible for the children at that time. Teachers will respond to your notes within 48 hours, usually sooner.

TLC’s Outdoor Plaza

The plaza in front of P.S. 150 has multiple uses. During the school day it is used for structured gym classes, and staff supervised recess playtime. Before and after school hours, the plaza is meant to be a safe, calm gathering place where children can play in a peaceful manner while their parents supervise. After 3:15 p.m. the plaza is again used for structured activities by Manhattan Youth’s After School Program. To ensure that the plaza is properly used, please note the following:

  • There is NO BALL PLAYING allowed on the plaza before school and after dismissal.

  • Children are not allowed to bring personal balls to school.

  • Staff will be monitoring the plaza in the morning before school starts.

  • Children ARE NOT permitted to walk in the greenery and go onto steps or enter private patio areas.

  • Further, the trash cans on the plaza do not belong to TLC. Any and all trash should be deposited in the trash cans on Greenwich St.

  • Dismissal is PROMPTLY AT 3PM. Once a child is dismissed, he/she may not re-enter the building.

  • At dismissal time, teachers are responsible for dismissing their students ONLY to people named on the child’s blue card and/or the Dismissal Information Form.

  • If a child is to go home with someone other than his/her parent, caregiver, or other person on file, WRITTEN NOTIFICATION must be faxed or sent with the child to school. The school must have received this information by 12:00 on the specified day.

  • CHANGES IN PICK UP MAY NO LONGER BE CALLED IN!!!

  • Teachers and staff are not responsible for calling parents to check if children have play dates, and should not be approached to make those types of arrangements while dismissing their class.

  • After dismissal, the plaza must be cleared of all parents, caregivers and dismissed students by 3:15 p.m. After-School Clubs begin at that time.

  • Adults who are with their children on the plaza are needed and expected to supervise them during the time before school and after dismissal to ensure everyone’s safety.

Immunizations & School Nurse

The school office must have your child’s completed health form by Monday, September 17th, 2007. At that time all immunizations must be up to date. Children will be excluded from class if we do not have a record stating immunizations are up to date on September 17th. If you have any questions about immunizations, please contact our school nurse, Linda Basile, Christine Walford, or our parent coordinator, Laura Cohen.

In addition, you should be aware that our nurse, Linda, is the only person who can administer medication at school (including inhalers and Epi-pens). In addition, she can only do so after she has received a medical authorization form that has been approved by the Department of Education. See Linda or call the office if you would like to request a form. Please remember, children may not bring medication to school.
